What is Girls’ Empo?
November 28, 2015
WHAT is GIRLS’ EMPO?
In Spanish, it’s Asociacion Empoderamiento, association for empowerment. Founded by former Peorian Annie Richey, it’s a group that encourages children in a rural area of northern Guatemala to continue in school beyond the primary grades.
One of its programs is a self-esteem building program for girls that combines play, discussions, and mentoring.
When you shop at Global Village on Small Business Saturday, November 28, 20% of your purchase will go to GirlsEmpo to support the mentoring program in the Dulce River valley.
Members of the Peoria Chapter of the National Organization for Women will distribute GirlsEmpo information and help you shop. We’ll open at 10:00 AM.
Come early for a great selection and free Fair Trade coffee!
